query custom field longer than 1000 chars?

I'm trying to build something using JSON data stored in a custom field. The data is more than 1000 characters in most cases. Can I use tlist_sql to get at this information? I know that the seating chart customization used fields of more than 1000 characters but digging around in it's source, I didn't see anything that looked any different than what I'm trying.

Is this possible, or do I need to break my data up into more than one custom field?

We are having an issue with the seating chart. It is producing an error when ever a teacher tries to save. Any help is appreciated.
